Little Rock Defense Lawyers Are Experienced with Federal Crimes

Federal criminal defense in Fayetteville and throughout Arkansas

Federal crimes include nonviolent offenses such as tax evasion as well as violent acts such as kidnapping. Some seemingly minor crimes, such as cutting down a Christmas tree in a national forest or running a stop sign on a military base, are federal offenses because the act occurred on federal property. Since 1994, the attorneys at the James Law Firm have successfully defended countless Arkansans accused of federal crimes. Our vast experience has taught us which defense tactics are most likely to succeed.

What are some common federal crimes?

The vast majority of criminal cases in the United States are prosecuted in state courts. In contrast, the number of federal crimes is quite limited, and they often involve criminal acts that cross state lines. Our experienced criminal defense attorneys represent people who are accused of all manner of federal crimes, including:

  • Drug trafficking — Federal drug trafficking penalties are stiff. A first offense carries a sentence of 10 years to life, a second conviction is 20 years to life, and a third brings a mandatory life term. Fines range up to $75 million.
  • RICO violations — RICO (short for the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) is aimed at making the leaders of a racketeering enterprise culpable for the crimes that they ordered their underlings to commit. To obtain a conviction, the federal prosecutor must prove that an enterprise existed, the enterprise affected interstate or foreign commerce, the defendant participated in the enterprise, and that the defendant committed at least two racketeering acts.
  • Financial crimes — Mail fraud, tax evasion, counterfeiting and money laundering are examples of federal economic crimes. The FBI, IRS and ATF are among the primary enforcement agencies in connection with these offenses.
  • Violent crimes — Aircraft hijacking, kidnapping and hate crimes are among the violent federal crimes. Since the enactment of the Sentencing Reform Act in 1987, parole is extremely limited in the federal system, so you should expect to serve the full length of your sentence.

Whether you are facing state or federal charges, our Arkansas criminal defense firm is committed to protecting your interests.
